Course Description

The course focuses on understanding LGBTQIA+ identities, legal protections and ethical care, communication strategies for LGBTQIA+ inclusive practice, building an inclusive practice environment, and assessing progress and ensuring continual improvement in LGBTQIA+ inclusive dental practice. Topics covered include familiarity with terminology, recognising diversity within the community, UK equality laws, ethical care for LGBTQIA+ patients, respectful communication techniques, creating safe spaces, and tools to assess inclusive practices. Case studies and role-play exercises are also included.

Course Outline

Section 1 of this course focuses on understanding LGBTQIA+ identities, including increased familiarity with terminology, understanding sexual orientation and gender identity, recognising diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community, and understanding LGBTQIA+ specific health disparities. The section also includes a thought experiment to apply acquired knowledge.

Section 2 of the course content focuses on legal protections and ethical care for LGBTQIA+ patients. It includes an overview of UK equality laws, importance of ethical care, addressing microaggressions, respecting privacy and confidentiality, and legal and ethical aspects in dental care. The section also covers communication strategies, building an inclusive practice environment, and assessing progress and ensuring continual improvement for successful LGBTQIA+ inclusive dental practice.

Section 3 of the course content focuses on communication strategies for LGBTQIA+ inclusive practice. It covers respectful communication techniques, medical history taking, discussing sexual health, addressing patients’ concerns and fears, and role-play exercises to improve communication with LGBTQIA+ patients.
