Course Outline

Section 1

The first section of this course covers the basics of decontamination and disinfection, including the importance and risks in dental practice, relevant terminologies and definitions, and regulations and guidelines for infection control in the UK. A case study on recent outbreaks and the role of inadequate disinfection is also included.

Section 2

Section 2 of the course covers the behaviour and biology of pathogens in oral surgery, including the different types of pathogens in a dental environment, how they spread, their resilience and resistance, and which pathogens are of particular concern. It also discusses the decontamination procedures required before, during, and after oral surgery, as well as how to maintain and monitor decontamination equipment. Finally, it includes a section on ensuring future compliance and continuous improvement through staff training, recording and reporting failures, updating protocols, and developing a decontamination policy and audit system.
