Course Description

The course covers stroke recognition, differentiating between stroke and TIA, managing stroke victims in the dental office, the pathophysiology of stroke, communication with stroke victims, stroke aftercare and patient management, and the development of a protocol for stroke in the dental office.

Course Outline

Section 1

Section 1 of the course covers understanding stroke, including recognizing signs of a stroke, differentiating between a stroke and TIA, the role of dental staff in stroke identification, managing stroke victims in the dental office, and a case study on quick response to a stroke crisis in the dental setting.

Section 2

Section 2 of this course covers the pathophysiology of stroke, including ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, the importance of blood flow to the brain, causes and risk factors associated with stroke, delayed stroke-like symptoms, and post-stroke syndrome. It also includes exercises to identify risk factors in a dental setting.

Section 3

Section 3 of this course covers communication with stroke victims, effective recognition of stroke symptoms, and the importance of “FAST” in stroke recognition. It also addresses the aftercare and management of stroke patients, as well as developing a specific protocol for stroke in a dental office.

Section 4

Section 4 of the course covers stroke aftercare and patient management. It includes understanding the recovery process and aftercare for stroke patients, managing regular dental check-ups for stroke recovered patients, adapting dental strategies for patients with a stroke history, the role of oral health in stroke prevention, and a case study on co-managing a stroke patient with a local GP.
