Course Description

This course covers the understanding and identification of cardiovascular emergencies, emergency management and triage, the role of dental professionals in cardiovascular emergencies, as well as prevention and patient education strategies. Topics covered include the overview of the cardiovascular system, recognizing symptoms of cardiovascular disease, essential elements of emergency management, the dental professional as a first responder, and patient education and prevention strategies. Case studies are used throughout the course to illustrate real-life scenarios.

Course Outline

Section 1

Section 1 of the course covers an overview of the cardiovascular system, understanding cardiovascular emergencies, common cardiovascular conditions that can emerge in a dental setting, the impact of dental procedures on cardiovascular health, and managing a patient with acute angina in dental practice. It also focuses on identifying symptoms of cardiovascular disease, patient history and risk factors, assessment skills for cardiovascular problems, differential diagnosis of cardiovascular symptoms, and thought experiments on identifying potential cardiovascular emergencies. Additionally, the section covers emergency management and triage, prioritizing care in a dental practice setting, immediate interventions for cardiovascular distress, preparing the dental practice for emergency situations, and rapid assessment and triaging a patient with suspected heart attack. The role of dental professionals in cardiovascular emergencies, as first responders, working with emergency medical services, resuscitative measures in dental practice, ethical and legal responsibilities in emergency care, and a collaborative approach to emergency management will also be discussed. Finally, the section ends with prevention and patient education, dental procedures in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions, patient education and prevention strategies, stress management techniques for dental patients, follow-up care and referral processes for at-risk patients, and key points on managing cardiovascular emergencies in dental practice.
